Dominica: March 2018

3/19/2018

DOMINICA - March 2018

Dominica: the Nature Island of the Caribbean
Known for its rich landscapes and wildlife.

In September 2017, hurricane Maria devastated the small island of about 74,000. While Puerto Rico was the main focus in the media, likely due to its size and status as an American colony, Dominica was also severely battered by the hurricane's 165mph winds.
According to the Guardian, when Hurricane Maria struck, Dominica was still recovering from tropical storm Erika, which pummeled the island in August 2015. That disaster caused about $483m of damage.

Small islands and communities that rely heavily on agriculture will need more support than ever as the climate continues to change and extreme weather patterns continue to increase in frequency.  These communities do not contribute nearly as much as larger countries and world powers to the pollution and destruction of the planet, and yet, their location forces them to bear the brunt of  Mother Nature's fury.

This March, Global United Diaspora will be going to Dominica to support in the reconstruction effort. We will be working in collaboration with designers, engineers and local officials to come up with  solutions for sustainable and resilient housing, agriculture, and community. While we as a global community work toward improving our relationship with the environment, we need temporary solutions to improve the quality of life for those dealing with the harshest consequences of capitalism's' abuse on our planet-- GUD intends to assist in mitigating some of the inevitable challenges that will come with this impending environmental backlash.
