Building Resiliency in DOMINICAWhat projects will we be working on?
We will be partnering with Mr. David Gibbs to work on setting up a mesh network in the Kalinago territory and also setting up solar panels in the Kalinago territory and various locations across Dominica. One of the solar projects involves a school that had solar panels before the hurricane hit. Most of our fund raising will be focused on the solar panels. We will be assisting in building resilient homes as well. Repairing houses and roofs that were destroyed by the storm and building them to a higher standard of resiliency and efficiency. What local issues will the projects help resolve? With respect to the mesh network, the Kalinago territory was one of the hardest hit in Dominica. The mesh network will aid in keeping communications active between residents and it is a self healing network, meaning if one node goes down, the network will repair itself. It allows people to communicate with each other even without electricity or when phone lines and internet are down. In the event of another big storm or natural disaster the mesh network will be critical in connecting with family members both near and far and even to reach out for help from first responders. Resilient housing will be providing housing for displaced people, people with damaged housing and roofing. Protecting people from the elements. It will be able to withstand 160 mph winds*. It will be able to withstand future disasters and diminish the extent of destruction due to design and specific building techniques. Solar panels will provide another source of electricity for houses and school where the supply has not been restored yet.
